April 6, 2009 The Police Were Unable to Disperse the Young Protesters
Yerevan—Today, at noon, the National Citizens’ Initiative (NCI) and a group of young activists held a demonstration in front of the Armenian National Assembly. The protest was against several points that were specified in the Armenian government’s draft law on making amendments to the law “On The Police Force.” The event participants demanded the revision of this bill’s Articles 17-19, because the latter’s implementation can bring about police terrorism, widespread violation of the people’s rights and freedoms, and the transformation of the police force—whose calling is to be the defender of these rights and freedoms—into an organ that subdues the citizenry. The rally brought together several dozens of youth, officials from other NGOs, and media representatives. Even though the police officers attempted to hamper the protest by resorting to brute force, it did take place and came to an end at 1:30pm.
